Event Information

People with ADHD may experience a range of difficulties when listening to continuous speech. Having ADHD can make it hard to focus on a lecture, the news, or the dialogue of a movie. It can make it challenging to remember and follow the instructions given by a supervisor on a worksite or a teacher in a classroom. It can also make it difficult to participate in a conversation, particularly with more than one speaker.

The difficulties experienced when listening to speech may lead to misunderstandings and missed information. They can also result in feelings of anxiety, frustration or overwhelm, which further interfere with listening.

This presentation will explore how both the structure of continuous speech and the nature of interpersonal communication create difficulties when combined with the core symptoms of ADHD. Examples will be provided from published research.

The focus will then turn to a discussion of how ADHD coaches might help their clients navigate the challenges of listening to speech.
